How do I get started?

The therapy process looks different for everyone and is typically individualized depending on the level of support needed and the presenting concerns. For example, someone with anxiety who is looking to learn new coping skills and have a nonjudgmental space to express and regulate through challenging emotions may see an outpatient therapist once a week where sessions are focused on whatever you bring into the room on that particular day. Someone who is seeking therapy to resolve past traumatic experiences may work with someone who utilizes and is trained in EMDR, seeing them once or even twice a week and sessions may be 60 minutes or even 90 minutes if an intensive EMDR session is requested or suggested.

All of our clinicians are able to meet clients where they are at and recommend and provide individualized support. How many sessions of therapy you need can vary from a couple weeks, to months, or even years depending on what the goals are and the level of engagement in the process. To get an understanding of what your therapeutic journey may look like, reach out to us today and schedule a free 15-minute consultation with any of our providers.

What can I expect from the therapy process?

Our practice is designed to support you no matter what you may be struggling with. Though our team and clinicians are specialized in the treatment of trauma disorders and disordered eating, these often co-occur with other concerns such as anxiety, depression, OCD, and more. All of our providers offer free 15-minute phone consultations so you can ask questions and explain what you are looking for and our clinicians can share how they can best support you. We are a multidisciplinary practice offering nutrition counseling, medication management, and individual, couples, and family therapy so if you are looking for a place that can do it all, look no further!

How do I know if your practice is the right fit?

Individuals navigating trauma who are experiencing distressing memories or symptoms may benefit from EMDR. The goal is to decrease your negative experiences and triggers related to the trauma while also increasing positive beliefs about yourself or the world around you, increasing self awareness. This type of therapy can help distress that may be stored in the body versus in your conscious awareness and can provide relief from negative past experiences impacting your present environment. The hope after engaging in EMDR therapy is that clients live a more fulfilling life, experience healthier relationships and can better deal with life's challenges knowing they have the tools they need to better manage anxiety in a healthier way. Self improvement takes time and a strong commitment to the therapeutic process. Benefits are never guaranteed and each person responds differently and will experience varied benefits as a result of their work.

How can EMDR therapy help me?

The EMDR protocol is not ideal for someone who is actively in a state of crisis and who is requiring stabilization or those with dissociative disorders. There are adaptations which can be made, however, and your therapist will do their best to modify it as needed for your specific needs. Severe substance use, eating disorders, and folks who experience psychosis are not always appropriate candidates for this specific treatment modality. EMDR can be adapted for use with children, however it is predominately used and researched for the individual counseling environment with teenagers and adults.

If you are unsure if EMDR is right for you, reach out to our admin team to schedule a consultation with one of our counselors. Those who do not find success with EMDR often turn to other popular modalities which are used with those who have experienced trauma, such as accelerated resolution therapy.

Who is EMDR not appropriate for?

EMDR is most commonly used to treat PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) but can also be effective for recent traumatic experiences such as single event traumas or even negative experiences that you may be feeling stuck in. It is effective for individuals who experience anxieties such as specific phobias, those with obsessive compulsive disorders, grief and mourning, somatic illnesses and even substance abuse/use in some cases.

Starting EMDR therapy begins very similar to starting talk therapy sessions. In the first session the therapist will work to gather a comprehensive history and then introduce you to coping skills during the "Resourcing" phase. When the therapist determines your readiness to reprocess trauma, they will facilitate the process while your brain does the majority of the work to heal itself. Including EMDR in the treatment plan is a decision made jointly by the therapist and the client and will never be done without explicit consent.

With a large team of clinicians, we are proud to be able to say that we have counselors who are able to assist with all of the above presenting concerns and more. Within our EMDR clinicians, we have counselors who are able to target EMDR to the specific memory or experience you are hoping to reprocess.

What disorder is EMDR most commonly used to treat?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and this therapy involves identifying traumatic memories and "reprocessing" them with the goal of releasing stored emotions, negative thoughts, and body sensations which correlate with the trauma. In EMDR, you recall a traumatic memory while stimulating both sides of the body (bilateral stimulation), which oftentimes looks like rapid eye movement(s) back and forth either by following a light on a bar or your counselor's hands. Your preference will be taken into account and will be incorporated into your sessions, as able.

A typical reprocessing session involves the therapist checking in with your experience and then guiding you through recalling a memory paired with the bilateral stimulation. This can be difficult work and elicit a lot of strong emotions so the therapist typically leaves time at the end of each of these sessions for a grounding technique/exercise.
