FAQs about psychiatry in Jacksonville

When should I see a psychiatrist vs a psychologist?

A psychiatry provider is a professional who has gone to medical college, has a medical degree, and has the ability to prescribe medications. This differs from a psychologist who also holds a Doctorate degree but who cannot prescribe any medications. Those who hold Doctorate degrees in Psychology can provide individual therapy or can choose to be an university professor. Psychologists also have the ability to conduct specific psychological testing and assessments that Masters-level providers are not able to. A therapist is an individual who has earned their Masters degree in counseling, social work, or another discipline and is able to provide individual therapy services as well as group counseling, marriage counseling, family therapy, etc. Masters-level clinicians are able to do assessments just as psychologists can but are limited in the ones they can administer. At Restored Purpose Counseling, we have multiple therapists, a psychologist, and a psychiatrist all of whom are eager to support you on your journey to wellness and can provide different insight and support depending on the kind of treatment you'd like to receive.

What’s the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychiatric nurse practitioner?

A psychiatrist has more medical training than a psychiatric nurse practitioner does. Psychiatrists typically focus more on medical conditions and on the diagnosing process. Psychiatric nurse practitioners take a more holistic and integrative approach to their work with patients. Both individuals can prescribe medication but their approach to doing so may look different. Psychiatrists typically pursue a Doctorate degree and complete a residency whereas psychiatric nurse practitioners do not have to, they can have a Masters degree in Nursing with a focus in psychiatry. The nurse practitioner on our team has her Doctor of Nursing degree however continues to take a more holistic approach to psychiatry instead of a medical approach as she finds this is more inclusive and effective.

How do I choose the right psychiatrist for me?

When choosing a provider, it is important to keep in mind what you are hoping to get out of the appointment and subsequent work with a psychiatrist. Most people carry the belief that psychiatrists are only there to prescribe medication, check for side effects and assess effectiveness and while that is a big part of the work they do, it doesn't have to be the only thing you get out of appointments with them. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner(s) (PMHNP) are also able to share input on medical symptoms you may be experiencing, explore ways to combat specific symptoms that are giving you difficulty, and assess current treatment methods to determine their effectiveness. If you are looking for a provider who is more than just someone who can write a prescription, reach out to our team today to book a free 15-minute consultation to determine if its the right fit for you.

Do you need a referral to see a psychiatrist in Florida?

Whether or not you require a referral to see a psychiatrist in Jacksonville, FL greatly depends upon your specific insurance plan as it can vary from company to company and from plan to plan. We suggest calling your insurance and asking if a referral is necessary to see a FL psychiatrist or psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, however, it has been our experience that a referral is rarely necessary. Our insurance team runs a verification of benefits for all of our clients with insurance and will let you know if it looks like a referral is needed prior to your first appointment. To schedule with our nurse practitioner or any of our other professionals, reach out to our Administrative team today!

When another organization might be a better fit for your needs

While our Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Elizabeth, has a medical degree and attended a medical university, she is not trained or able to support someone who is seeking primary care or specialized medical services. If you are looking for a primary care provider or other medical professional, we recommend that you reach out to either the Gaudiani Clinic or Dr. Kara Pepper. Both of these practices contain medical doctors that have experience and are skilled in supporting those struggling with an eating disorder. They can support you as your work to achieve medical stability and manage medical symptoms while providing oversight on vitals and other indicators of health and wellness.

If You Are Seeking Medical Care

If you are experiencing debilitating symptoms as a result of your mental health disorder(s) and find yourself needing more support than once or twice weekly counseling, we may not be the best fit to support you at this moment in time. For options that may provide more support, we would recommend Equip Health and Monte Nido for support with an eating disorder. If you are seeking additional support for a primary mental health concern, we would recommend reaching out to Wolfson's Childrens' for children and adolescents or Koru Springs  or Waves of Hope for adults, both women and men.

When Your Eating Disorder or Other Mental Health Disorder is Severe

Currently, our practice is able to support individuals who are ages 7 and up with certain exceptions being made for 5 and 6 year olds who have strong parental or guardian involvement and support. If you are looking for treatment for a loved one who is under the age of 5, we would recommend visiting Find ED Help to search for professionals in your area that work with younger children who have a suspected or confirmed eating disorder.
