In the mental health field, it is common knowledge that all individuals are affected by mental health in one way or another, however, some issues exist that affect only female-identifying individuals. There are also specific mental health issues that affect women more than men. It is important to talk openly about these and share resources for those who may be suffering from specific women's issues and who are looking for support. Restored Purpose Counseling has several therapists on our team who provide mental health services to women and support women's mental health. These clinicians are qualified to support you on your journey. We accept insurance to keep sessions affordable and deliver the quality care you deserve. Keep reading to learn more about these specific therapists and what therapy for women's issues can look like.
A therapist specializing in women's issues is a therapist who can provide therapy and support a variety of presenting concerns. Women's issues can include both physical and mental health challenges and these challenges can be concerns that only affect women or that tend to affect women more significantly or more frequently as compared to men. These concerns may include, but are not limited to: low self esteem, life transitions, significant life events (becoming an empty nester, transitioning out of college into the workforce, etc.), domestic abuse or violence, relationship challenges, chronic illnesses (such as PCOS, hormone imbalances, etc.), perinatal mental health, postpartum depression, infertility concerns and/or infant loss, and more.
Our practice is a great option for those seeking support for specific women's issues, especially those which may benefit from a multidisciplinary approach. For example, women who struggle with certain chronic illnesses such as PCOS, endometriosis, or hormone imbalances may benefit from working with a mental health counselor to address the emotions that come along with these diagnoses and navigating the healthcare system. Additionally, these women may also benefit from working with a registered dietitian to become informed on nutrition and approaches they can take to improve their physical health and symptoms. Restored Purpose Counseling is a multidisciplinary practice that has therapists and dietitians in order to support both of these goals in one place.
Other women's issues may be supported or supplemented with additional resources such as working closely with a medical provider, support groups, community resources, women's shelters, and potentially other supports as well. Restored Purpose Counseling is not an all-inclusive practice however we do have many qualified professionals who are able to support with various women's issues from both a mental health perspective and a nutritional perspective. We are well connected in the community and can provide resources and referrals upon requests to additional supports, if needed.
It can be true that female-identifying individuals may prefer to work with a female-identifying therapist. It is understandable that individuals would feel comfortable working with providers that hold some of the same identities that they do, including gender. This could be due to the reassurance that their provider will understand or has lived experience with some of their concerns and can speak from both a professional and personal place about it. For example, if you are an older female-identifying individual seeking therapy due to becoming an empty nester, going through menopause, and considering a career change then you might feel comfortable seeing an older woman therapist who is a mother in the hopes that they have experienced some of these issues in their life as well and can understand your thoughts and feelings on the subject. Additionally, it can remove the burden of explaining or having to inform the provider of certain terms or educate on health conditions and symptoms.
Comparatively, some individuals may not care which gender their provider identifies with. All preferences are valid and taken into account during our scheduling process, and it is okay if you do not have any preferences either! If you had a good relationship with your father growing up or you have a preference for the way men view the world, you may prefer to work with a therapist who identifies as male. You may also want a therapist who is apart of the queer community if you yourself identify in that way. Whatever your preferences are, you have a right to express them and make the final decision regarding the right therapist for you.
Our therapy process is easy to navigate with the hopes of getting you scheduled quickly so you can receive the support you are seeking. It starts with a call, or text, or email, whatever your preferred method of communication is when you reach out to us. Once you are connected with an Intake Specialist, they will collect all necessary information from you and get you scheduled with one of our providers for the service(s) you are seeking. We will work to verify your insurance coverage before your first appointment and ensure you have all the paperwork filled out so your provider has an idea of what you are seeking support for prior to your first meeting.
Once you start individual therapy and have your first session, your therapist will work to gather important historical information and work alongside you to develop a plan for how to support your current concerns. Meetings will continue on a regular basis, typically weekly, to support you as you work towards your goals.
